What Are Message Tokens?

Learn how AI measures conversations and tracks usage using message tokens

Message tokens are units used to measure how much text your AI processes when generating responses. Each word, punctuation mark, and character is broken down into smaller parts called tokens.

For example:

The word "Chatbot" = 1 token

The sentence "How can I help you?" = ~6 tokens

So, whenever your AI chatbot reads your customer’s message and responds, it consumes message tokens.

Why Are Message Tokens Important?

Your AI usage is tracked based on message tokens. These tokens help calculate:

How many AI-generated replies you can use

How much of your plan has been used

In your ReComAI dashboard, you’ll see your monthly message token usage.

For example:

Message tokens used: 361 / 5,000,000

This means you’ve used 361 tokens out of your plan limit of 5 million this month.

Token Usage by AI Model

Here’s a rough estimate of how many tokens are used depending on your AI model:

GPT 4o: ~10–30 input tokens per message, ~20–50 output tokens per response.
